Syrup Reviews - Monin White Chocolate and Monin Sugar Cane

I posted a while back that I was going to order a few syrups to try and get away from the Ghirardelli white chocolate powder that I usually use in my mochas. I’ve used this powder for a while, but it’s getting too difficult to order it online these days without it being too expensive (~50 cents per ounce on amazon.com at the moment). You can sometimes find it cheaper, but then shipping prices are high.

I ordered the following two syrups from Eurocafe Imports through Roaste.com. Shipping was very prompt and the syrups were well packaged and protected

Monin’s White Chocolate Syrup (~37 cents per ounce on Roaste.com)

The first product up was Monin’s white chocolate syrup. It was unfortunately not a pleasant experience. The syrup itself has a bit of an unpleasant aftertaste and I don’t really taste any white chocolate in it. It’s not the worst white chocolate mocha I’ve had, but it wasn’t very good at all. I used it in a cold drink according to the directions, but maybe it would taste better hot? I’ve heard their white chocolate sauce is supposed to be better, but it’s not offered on Roaste.com.

Monin’s Sugar Cane Syrup (~37 cents per ounce on Roaste.com)

The sugar cane syrup however was quite nice, especially in cold drinks where sometimes it’s more difficult to ensure a good mixture. I could see myself adding it to those kind of coffee drinks as well as maybe adding it to lemonades/tea/etc. Definitely a hit. The only reason I wouldn’t rate it higher is it’s essentially just a simple syrup that anyone could make at home.

So the first syrup experience is mixed. I’m still looking for a good white chocolate syrup, but I have the feeling the sugar cane syrup will be used up fairly quickly.
